WURZBACH ROAD/PARKWAY
In 1904 William Wurzbach (1869-??) and his father-in-law, Gustav Schmeltzer, bought 1,400 acres in northwest San Antonio. Wurzbach, an attorney and county judge, built a home in a pasture now at Interstate 10 and Wurzbach Road, site of an H-E-B store. The family built a road so they could get around the farm, extending it up the hill as far as what is now Fredericksburg Road and later deeding the roadway to the county. When Wurzbach Parkway is completed across the city north of Loop 410, the name will extend far beyond the original family property. Stories about the Wurzbach brothers, William and Charles (p. 25), were preserved and passed on to the author by William’s daughter, Emily Wurzbach Mickler, who died in 2007 at the age of 107.
